India ready to increase trade turnover with Azerbaijan

India is interested in increasing the trade turnover with Azerbaijan, Sanjay Rana, Indian ambassador to Azerbaijan, told reporters Feb. 12.

"The trade turnover between Azerbaijan and India amounted to $815 million in 2015,” he said. "Some $778 million accounted for the import of Azerbaijani goods. I think this is a low index for our countries."

"I believe that the trade turnover between Azerbaijan and India must increase in the near future,” he said. "In particular, the commissioning of the North-South transport corridor must contribute to an increase in the trade turnover.”

The North-South corridor will link Northern Europe with South-Eastern Asia. It will serve as a link between the railways of Iran, Azerbaijan and Russia.

The corridor’s capacity will be 1.4 million passengers and five-seven million tons of cargo per year, according to the preliminary estimates. Moreover, 22 tunnels and 15 bridges will be built along the corridor.

At the initial stage, it is planned to transport six million tons of cargo via the North-South corridor per year, while 15-20 million tons of cargo in the future.
